Choosing colors for your wedding can seem like a daunting task. You're probably not reading this if you're a creative professional, which means you likely don't know much about color science. So, you Googled it. You looked at some Pinterest mood boards but it was all the same few things regurgitated endlessly into cookie-cutter designs. So you came here. Because you saw somewhere that this crazy blog was for unique couples who like to do things differently. Love, you came to the right place.

Instead of choosing one of those five basic mood boards floating around the internet create your own color SCHEME.

Notice that I did not say to pick your favorite color and two accents. We choose 5 colors total for our clients and there's not always a central color. *gasps

A few things to consider:

  1. How do you want your wedding to feel? Bold? Dark? Light and airy? Timeless?

  2. DO NOT consider the season. When people see your wedding photos no one is going to ask why your bridesmaids are wearing maroon in the spring. No one.

  3. Think of words to describe your personal style. As many as you want but 3 main words to keep things simple.

We've just established your wedding style! Congratulations! You can add a theme if you like but do it in a way that blends 1 and 3 to make sure YOU shine through. Now let's dig into your color scheme.

Choose one color. It can be your favorite color or it can just be a color that matches your style. Be specific about the color. Not just green but Hunter Green.

Then, choose a harmony rule. This is how your colors relate to each other on the color wheel. There are a few but for your purposes let's quickly review 3: Analogous, Monochromatic, and Complimentary. The first rule selects colors that are all next to each other on the color wheel. Use this when you want an event that flows smoothly without much contrast. Maybe you're the soft, romantic, light and airy type. This might be your jam. The second rule is the exact opposite. It's using two colors on the opposite end of the wheel to make a bold statement that doesn't look clownish. If you're into jewel tones or are planning a carnival theme, etc., maybe try this method. The third rule is just a number of variations of one color. It's a way to sophisticated the scheme when you really live in just one color. You look at a color wheel and choose 5 different spots in line with your color going from the center to the outside of the wheel.

Now, pull up a color wheel, choose a color, and choose a rule to apply. Boom. Wedding color scheme.

Now, if that all sounds like too much, you can still go to this free online tool and apply this knowledge to find schemes you'll love.

Do it yourself, fire up the computer, or schedule a chat, the choice is yours! Just make it YOU.
